Australian open 2018

The Australian Open is the first Grand Slam of the year in the ATP Calendar. It is usually played at the end of January. The event is managed and owned by Tennis Australia – the governing body for the sport of tennis in Australia. It is played in the Australian summer (which takes place from December to February).
The Australian Open is held at the Melbourne Park, a tennis facility in Melbourne, Australia, which features the Rod Laver Arena (main arena), with Hisense and Margaret Court arenas being secondary, all being equipped with retractable roofs (in case of rain or extreme heat). The tennis complex also has 35 smaller courts for practice and matches.
The first edition of Australian Open took place on 1905. The tournament was played on grass courts since then, before switching to hard courts in 1988.

Australian Open Prize Money 2018:

The prize money for the 2018 edition will be announced when the event will start. Expect a 14% increase, overall.

Australian Open Preview, History and Records

The tournament, even though it was popular in Australia and nearby countries, never managed to attract foreign players for many, many years. Travelling from Europe to Australia by ship took as long as 45 days and even after transport became less difficult, many top players ignored the Australian Open.

Between 1970 and 1980, the Australian Open was mostly contested among players from the USA, Australia or New Zealand. The last Aussie to win the event was Mark Edmondson in 1976.

Over time, the Australian Open's audience increased by a rate of 7% yearly, which is above the rate for the US Open (3% increase yearly). The 2017 edition had 728,763 spectators, an all time record.
The prize money also increased to AUD,000,000 (around USD million) and it is expected to raise above these figures in 2018.

In the men's competition, the record for most title wins is shared between Roy Emerson and Novak Djokovic, with six titles each. However, Emerson won his titles before the Open Era. Given the fact that all Novak's trophies were won not only in the Open Era, but facing great competition from Nadal, Federer or Murray, it is safe to say that Novak Djokovic is the absolute king of Australian Open.
Roger Federer is next, with five titles, the last one won in 2017. He's also the only player still active that has big chances to match Djokovic's record of six titles.

In the women's competition, Margaret Smith Court won the Open 11 times (7 in the Amateur Era and 4 in the Open Era), while Serena Williams comes next with 7 titles in the Open Era. The only player still active that has more than one trophy is Victoria Azarenka, with 2 titles.
